WEB SITE EVALUATION AND WEB SITE TRAFFIC ANALYSIS FIRMS POLL VISITORS

Survey Reveals Lack of Quantitative Research Input in Web Site Development Efforts

July 10, 2000, Media, Pennsylvania – Webjectives, Inc., the first company dedicated to Web site and strategy evaluations that focus on business value, in association with WebSiteTrafficReport.com, today announced the results of an online survey polling site visitors on issues relating to their Web site evaluation, traffic and research methodologies.

The survey, which collected data from March through May of 2000, is designed to assess the research and planning activities in which respondents engage relating to their Web development efforts. The online survey was executed using SurveyExpert (www.esurveywizard.com), a tool that allow companies to design and implement online surveys.

“We believe that the Web development industry is not tracking to established marketing metrics and measurements,” explains James Burdette, president, Webjectives. “There is a perception that as all things online are ‘new’ they are experimental. In reality, online initiatives should be held to the same standards of success as other marketing endeavors – do they contribute to the bottom line.”

Respondents represented a wide range of industries, with the greatest concentration in business, computers and the internet, education, and entertainment areas. Of those surveyed:
  • 67 percent rank their Web site as important or absolutely critical to their business
  • 47 percent report fewer than 200 unique visitors to the site per month
  • 62 percent make updates either daily or weekly
  • 52 percent “never” or “occasionally” analyze site traffic beyond looking at the number of visitors
  • 52 percent of respondents “never” use any actives means such as surveys or focus groups to obtain site feedback
In terms of what respondents would most like to learn about their site visitors, many, predictably, reported they would like to know if the visitor found what they were looking for, more information on visitors, such as telephone numbers and email addresses for future marketing initiatives. In addition, respondents were interested in learning if a visitor was a first time visitor or a repeat visitor, how they found the site, and more demographic details on the visitors.

Interestingly, of the companies that consider there web site to be an important or absolutely critical part of there business, only 40% acknowledged that they conduct surveys or focus groups to obtain feedback about their sites. These companies do claim to make weekly revisions to their sites and 57% of the respondents say that they analyze their web site traffic beyond looking at the number of hits.
